One October night, a full moon shining through the biggest, brightest halo of light, I listened to waves of aircraft heading for the Middle East, and a war that will probably never be won.
Later on, I discovered that in one of those planes going overhead was a best friend from my schooldays. He'd become a flyer, fulfilling an ambition to travel that we'd talked about many times.....
I remembered one breathless, still evening when we walked along singing on a beach, working out harmonies, sharing dreams. There were dunes behind us, sea in front, and above us a velvet sky dotted with stars. Some of them were shooting across the horizon, tails streaming - these were our planes. We were young, and had no idea about the world....
